Chocolate with Sprinkles

"On their 25th wedding anniversary, a bickering couple is given one day to do something they haven't done in 25 years — work on their marriage."

Director's Statement

I have a photo of my parents taped to the wall above my desk. It's the only picture I have with both of them actually sitting together. Even while the world devalues so much of my humanity as a Black, Muslim woman, because of them, I know who I am.

Like the couple in my story, in 1966 my parents opened a donut shop. Through the years, that shop kept food on the table and a roof over our heads — but it certainly was not easy for them. Now that I am a wife, a mother, and an entrepreneur, I realize how hard it must have been to be their best for a marriage, children, and a struggling business all at once.

When my parents passed away suddenly, they were in the midst of a divorce. I often wonder whether they're still in heaven fussing. Their story is like so many parents who work themselves to exhaustion but still have ample love for their children. I am my best because of them. This film is inspired by their story.
